SARS-FANG CENTRE FOR EVOLUTIONARY AND DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY
OCEAN UNIVERSITY OF CHINA, QINGDAO
The Sars-Fang Centre, established in 2020, will perform basic research in evolutionary and developmental biology, using advanced methods of molecular /cell /computational biology and a variety of model organisms, including marine species. These will allow in-depth functional studies of biological processes. The Sars-Fang Centre is located at the Ocean University of China (OUC) in Qingdao and its establishment phase is co-financed by the University of Bergen (Norway). It is planned as a sister institute of the Sars Centre (Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology) in Norway which is a partner of E.M.B.L. (European Molecular Biology Laboratory).
GROUP LEADER POSITION 6 + 4 YEAR CONTRACTS
The Sars-Fang Centre is seeking outstanding candidates addressing fundamental questions of organismal biology with diverse advanced methodologies. A contract of 6 years with OUC as employer will be offered to successful candidates, with excellent resources for the research (postdocs, PhD students, technical assistance, lab space and project-specific facilities) as well as competitive salary and benefits. The contract can be prolonged for up to 4 years after review. Group leaders at the Sars-Fang Centre will apply for Talent programs from OUC and are encouraged to obtain additional funding through grant applications to national and international funding agencies. Although their main task will be research, they are welcome to participate in teaching programmes at OUC colleges.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must hold a PhD considered equivalent to Chinese and international PhD degrees, be able to lead/train junior scientists and technical staff towards a common goal defined in the group leader proposal, and develop collaborations with other groups in and out of the institution. Most group leaders are expected to be at an early career stage, typically 5-10 years after being awarded their PhD degree. However, applicants at a later career stage will also be considered in this call, if they have excellent scientific records and managerial experience.

Applications in English (language used daily at the Centre) must include: a description of past and present research (max 3 pages, literature references not counted), a proposal for the research at the Sars-Fang Centre (max 3 pages, literature references not counted), a letter of motivation, a detailed CV and contact information for 3 References.
Application Deadline is 25 October 2019 – 5pm Qingdao time. All shortlisted candidates will be informed not later than 10 November by email. They must be available for a seminar and interview by the international Scientific Advisory Committee, held in Qingdao on 25 and 26 November 2019.
